Stephen Downs談blog於教育上之運用

Stephen Downs於近期EDUCAUSE中發表Educational Blogging一文，簡介blog歷史，在教育界的用途，及目前幾個著名的blog提供商。

他在文中大量的引用他人的對blog的想法及使用心得，包括老師、學生及一些著名的網誌作家。其中有一些心得深得我心，我將它們摘錄如下:

• 911事件後，網誌成為新媒體，不僅傳遞最新訊息，也成為情感交流管道。Blogging not only allowed us access to the event, it made us part of the event.

• Blog到底該記錄什麼，是好文連結，閱讀心得，或是心情雜記，並無限定。Blog的核心在於一個可快速產出個人發表，且按照時間排序的出版工具。Blogging is something defined by format and process, not by content.

• 學生在強制之下去寫的blog是不會長久的。Students who are asked to blog are blogging for an audience, the teacher. When the semester ends, students drop blogging like wet cement. (我也覺得寫blog必須是一個自發性的工作，畢竟這是一個非常個人的事情，個人的心情，個人的感想。若在強制性下寫的東西，將缺乏真誠度及深刻度。)

• 有些學生寫得平淡無味，也許是因為他們不知道blog可以有的多元型態，所以在要求學生寫之前，應先要求學生看，並發表看後感想。Instead of assigning students to go write, we should assign them to read and then link to what interests them and write about why it does and what it means.

• 「寫」blog只是blogging過程中的最後一步。「讀」是第一步，讀完之後的「reflecting, criticizing, questioning, reacting」是第二步，寫則是最後一步。(由這一點我思考在pchome及yahoo上的網路日記與Blog的不同。網路日記著重在個人情感抒發；而Blog則是著重於”讀”後感想，是基於讀某個新聞，某個文章，某本書等所引發的，也因此blog通常會有許多引文、連結。)

• 在文章的結尾，Stephen Downs引用另一位網誌作家Will Richardsony在與他的私人電子郵件中所寫下的一段話，我覺得非常有震撼力。 Ultimately, aren’t we trying to teach our kids how to learn, and isn’t that what blogging is all about? 的確，每一位教育工作者，其最重要的目的並不是教導學生知識，而是教導學生如何學習，讓他們能在離開學校後，仍具有學習的能力。而寫blog所蘊含的process (read, reflect, write, and communicate)，不正是培養學生自學的最佳利器嗎?
