#P9kd^V0As you may have already heard, San Diego State University was recently named as the country's top small research university.

M_f:`A U&H4U&s0This ranking is based on a relatively new empirical approach, the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index (FSPI), developed by Academic Analytics.  In contrast to commonly used ranking systems that include subjective reputational factors, the FSPI is derived from the number of publications (both books and journal articles), citations, federal grants and honorific awards (e.g., Fulbrights).  The category "small research university" is defined as an institution offering 14 or fewer Ph.D. programs, and the ranking is from 2005 data.
